Why the Thule RoundTrip?

In early 2025, I was at Velofollies and spotted the RoundTrip cycling bag at the Thule booth. For my Ardennes rides, I’d been stuffing all my gear into a sports bag with one big compartment… Not exactly convenient, let alone organized. That’s why I wanted to take a closer look at this bag.

Days and weeks after the expo, the bag was still on my mind, and after some deliberation, I ordered one. Perfect timing to test it out on the first Ardennes ride of the year…

Tested in/on: Whenever I drive somewhere to ride away from home, this bag comes along. Most items that don’t need washing or are extras stay in the bag permanently. This way, I’m always ready to roll at a moment’s notice.

Period: From spring 2025 to present.

What I love about the Thule RoundTrip

Tons of practical compartments: Thanks to the numerous compartments, I can easily find all my gear. If I need something quickly or forgot something, I don’t have to dig around like in the big compartment of my old sports bag. The compartments also come in various sizes, which is very handy.

Large separate section for dirty clothes: Dirty and sweaty clothes used to end up in a bin or somewhere in a side pocket in the trunk. Now everything goes neatly into the designated compartment, and I don’t accidentally leave a sock or glove behind in the car.

Excellent quality: I also have a Thule bike rack that I’m very happy with, for example. When it comes to quality, I rarely hesitate when buying something from Thule. Sure, it costs a bit, but you get outstanding quality in return. Plus, in my experience, the convenience and the fact that I can find my gear faster and easier make the bag’s price absolutely worth it… And if you shop around, you definitely don’t have to pay the full retail price for this bag… (free tip! ;-))

Huge storage space for helmet & shoes: Besides the smaller compartments, there’s a large section that fits a helmet, and you can stash your shoes on the side. Before buying the bag, I read in some online reviews that large shoes wouldn’t fit… Here and there, I read the opposite. I also thought to myself that it would be pretty dumb to design that compartment “too small.”

My size 46 XC shoes fit easily, and my slightly wider and larger (size 47) trail shoes also fit nicely in the bag. With the latter, a little push to fully close the zipper is sometimes needed. The compartment is lined with sailcloth material, making it easy to clean, so your dirty shoes can go in there too—after the ride, of course!

A trail MTB helmet with visor fits perfectly in the helmet compartment. I don’t have a full-face (yet), but from what I’ve read in reviews, it should fit… to be continued…

What could be better

Double handle placement: There’s a large handle in the middle of the bag. Additionally, there’s a large strap for carrying over your shoulder. All great. There’s also a handle on each “short” side of the bag… I find these less practical because I never carry the bag that way. I would have preferred them on the long side where they could combine into one handle.

Sunglasses compartment won’t fit large cases: There’s a special compartment for storing your cycling glasses. The compartment has a soft padded interior to protect your glasses. Handy! However, I have a (fairly expensive) prescription pair and feel more comfortable keeping them in their case. Unfortunately, mine doesn’t fit in the compartment. So I currently have something else in there. Not really a drawback in principle, but personally a bit inconvenient for me.

Verdict

Aside from a few minor details, I can’t say much bad about my purchase. The bag allows me to organize all my cycling gear in one place in an orderly fashion. My previous bag, with one large compartment, fell short in that regard, so I’ve made a significant upgrade with this bag. Thanks to the Thule RoundTrip, I’m packed and ready in no time for an MTB trip to the Ardennes or elsewhere…

The Thule RoundTrip is a handy bag if you like keeping your cycling gear organized in one place when heading out for rides away from home.

FAQ

Will large MTB shoes fit?

My size 47 trail shoes fit snugly, and with a bit of help, I can still close the zipper. Narrower XC shoes definitely fit—my size 46s go in without any issues.

Can I store my dirty clothes separately?

Absolutely. At the top of the bag, there’s a large compartment lined with sailcloth material where you can store your dirty and sweaty clothes. This keeps them separated from your other (clean) gear.

Will a full-face helmet fit?

A trail MTB helmet with visor fits perfectly. For a full-face helmet, there are indications in other reviews that it should fit, but I haven’t tested this myself yet.

How many compartments does the bag have?

The bag has no fewer than 30 different compartments in various sizes, allowing you to organize all your gear in an orderly fashion. The compartments for shoes and dirty clothes have sailcloth material that’s easy to clean. The glasses compartment is softly padded.

Is the bag suitable for daily use or mainly for trips?

The bag is ideal for trips and car journeys. You can leave your standard gear in it, so you’re always ready to go quickly for a ride away from home or a cycling vacation. Thanks to the shoulder strap, you can also carry the bag on your back.

Is the bag worth the money?

Although the bag isn’t cheap, you get excellent Thule quality. The convenience and organized storage make the investment well worth it, in my opinion. Plus, you don’t have to pay full retail price if you shop around at various stores or order through our links…
