Why the Vaude Moab Tech PRO AM

With the switch to (more) trail riding, I wanted appropriate shoes. I was still debating whether to go for flat shoes, but since I’m used to clipless pedals, I chose shoes with cleats.

My XC shoes have been through quite a bit, so I definitely wanted a robust shoe that also had to be vegan, as I’m vegan and like to consider that in my choices.

You don’t have a huge selection then, but I quickly ended up at the Vaude brand. They’re known for their sustainable choices and products.

My eye fell on the Moab Tech PRO AM shoes, made from recycled PET bottles and a sole with vegan PU foam. The looks of these shoes immediately appealed to me too. So the decision was made pretty quickly…

Tested setups: Vaude Moab Tech PRO AM size 47 with SPD cleats

Tested in/on: Local trails, technical Ardennes routes, bike park, hike-a-bike sections, various weather conditions

Period: Summer & fall 2025

What I love about the Vaude Moab Tech PRO AM Shoes

Versatility: Thanks to the flatter construction, you can also walk perfectly in these shoes in places where cycling isn’t feasible. On the pedal, the shoe feels very stable, inspires confidence, and pedals efficiently. Being clipped in obviously contributes to that last point for me.

BOA® L6 system: The dial system is ingenious and offers micro-adjustment on the fly. Press the button and turn to tighten, pull the button out to release the system. It took some figuring out (and even looking up) how it works exactly (there are different BOA systems), but once you know, you have perfect control and it works flawlessly.

Excellent contact area & stability: These shoes are quite substantial with plenty of contact area on the pedal. This inspires confidence during both technical climbs and descents.

Protection & comfort: The shoes are reinforced in crucial places including toes, heels, and ankles. This provides extra protection against rocks and branches. The anatomical insole is particularly comfortable, even during longer rides. The shoes are also suitable for riders with wider feet.

What could be better

Weight: At approximately 634g per shoe (size 47 + SPD cleat), they’re noticeably heavier than pure XC shoes (my NW Rebel’s weigh 419 grams). Not an issue for me personally, but especially if you’re coming from XC shoes like me, the difference is noticeable.

BOA system takes getting used to: The L6 system is brilliant once you know how it works. It operates differently than some other BOA closures I was used to. I had to look up exactly how it worked. Also important: don’t overtighten, because that gave me toe pain once (not pleasant!). The right tension/adjustment is crucial, and that requires some fine-tuning (on the go).

Durability: After a few rides, I noticed a small tear at the front of the shoe. Probably hit something hard or scraped along something. I wasn’t even aware of it until I happened to notice the tear. Well, obviously this type of “wear” is hard to avoid with intensive use on technical terrain… For now, I’m chalking it up to bad luck since the rest of the shoes are still perfectly intact.

Verdict

The Vaude Moab Tech PRO AM shoes are excellent trail shoes for those seeking versatility. They combine clipless efficiency with hiking comfort and offer solid protection and stability for technical trails.

I have size 47 because that’s what the size chart indicated (I normally wear 46), but I don’t feel like they’re too big. Size 46 might have fit as well, but I wanted to be sure. The roomy fit also makes them perfect for wider feet.

So far, I’m very satisfied. They’re comfortable shoes to wear, despite taking some getting used to the extra weight compared to my XC shoes. The combination of protection, comfort, and functionality makes them ideal for a variety of rides.

The Vaude Moab Tech PRO AM is an excellent choice for trail, AM, or even enduro riders who value comfort, protection, and versatility over ultra-light weight.

FAQ

Are the Vaude Moab Tech PRO AM suitable for longer rides?

Yes, absolutely. The anatomical insole offers excellent comfort. The breathable, moisture-regulating lining keeps your feet comfortable.

What size should I get?

Vaude’s size chart is reliable. I normally wear size 46, but chose 47 as the size chart indicated. They fit perfectly without feeling too big. The shoes are suitable for wider feet.

Do they stay comfortable during technical trails?

100%, provided you adjust the BOA closure correctly. Don’t overtighten—that’s crucial. With the right tension, they offer perfect control without discomfort.

Can I use these shoes with flat pedals?

No, the PRO version is specifically for clipless pedals (SPD system). Want to use flat pedals? Then the Vaude AM Moab Tech (without PRO) is the right choice—it has the same construction but without cleat compatibility.

How waterproof are these shoes?

The shoes have an ECO FINISH coating that’s water and dirt-repellent (PFC-free), but they’re not completely waterproof. In light rain and spray, your feet stay dry, but during prolonged rainy rides or deep puddles, moisture can get in. The breathable lining does ensure quick drying.

Can I use cleats other than SPD?

Yes, the shoes are compatible with cleats from all major manufacturers that use the 2-bolt SPD standard.
